Why support the Y

Your gift for a brighter future

In Sarasota County, there are over 1000 homeless children, and every year the YMCA Youth Shelter provides a safe and supportive environment on a temporary basis to over 300 of those children because they have no other place to go. The Schoolhouse Link program supports many of the homeless youth by removing barriers that prevent the student from getting a public education. Of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and the Sarasota Family YMCA provides free counseling to young individuals and families who are having personal or family problems.

Education is the single largest factor that can improve the the future for the next generation. The Sarasota Family Y creates educational opportunity through the HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters), Achievers, YReads and Y-Mentor programs, providing the means and support for children to learn, grow and succeed in setting and achieving their goals.

There were over 2,200 children, through no fault of their own, in the Foster Care system (Manatee, Sarasota and De Soto counties) last year. The Y through the Safe Children Coalition, works tirelessly to prevent children from entering the system, to reunite children with their families, to find safe and supportive foster care homes and to arrange adoptions when family reunification is not an option.

Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. The need for financial assistance is felt across all ages and circumstances; from young and old to individuals with special needs and struggling families. Last year, the Sarasota Y provided financial assistance to over 3,700 individuals and families.

This need is in your community, right here at home.

Your donation or volunteer support means a brighter future for the next generation.
